UConnect: Skill Building Program For Our Participants
UConnect, recently hosted at our Bateau Bay offices, saw eight regular participants attending the two-week program. They brought with them a range of experiences, values, and goals and respected each other, forming many friendships.
Throughout the Uconnect program, there were a variety of guest speakers engaging with participants providing information about services available. Doorways spoke about local housing, services available to assist with housing, rental properties, and budgeting. NSW Youth Health talked to the group about the services they offer and mental health.
Dooralong brought one of their young participants to the training and made the group aware of their services. They moved the group by speaking about his rehabilitation journey with drugs and alcohol.
At the end of the program, participants felt that the training helped them improve their goal-setting, motivation, and interpersonal skills.
Two examples of young people who benefited from the UConnect program are; Jayden, who was struggling to speak in front of others, settings goals, and participating in group activities. The Uconnect program motivated him to reach out to a General Practioner (GP) and helped him set-up goals to work towards his mental health and, Jacinda, who not only did had a clearer idea about her career goals, but was also confident to start interviewing for suitable job opportunities. Jacinda has applied for a job and is currently waiting to hear back from the employer.
