A Man with A Plan
Varun grew up in India and completed Year 12 and secured a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Applications. But he dreamed of a better future for himself and his future family so Varun migrated to Australia.
Unfortunately in 2008, Varun had Bilateral Optic Atrophy which led to Varun being deemed ‘Legally Blind’ even though he still has some vision. It was a big setback for Varun but that did not dampened his spirits. Having a degree in Computer Applications, Varun used various adaptive technology to study English and earn a Diploma in Community Welfare and Certificate IV Community Services. Varun supported himself by working casual odd jobs along the way.
When Uniting (NSW.ACT) provided job opportunities for people with various barriers, Varun was one of the lucky ones to be considered for a Local Area Coordinator role, with the assistance of Ability Options.
Ability Options have been assisting Varun from the day he first joined the service by updating his resume and cover letters and doing reverse marketing. Now that Varun was about to start a job, Ability Options coordinated with Uniting to determine what support Varun will need at the workplace.
Being a well-educated man, Varun can handle the in-house training and knowledge building that was a requirement a successful LAC. Therefore, the vision impairment needed to be addressed so that Varun can be successful in his role and work independently. Ability Options organised a workplace modification assessment via Job Access and Varun was provide several adaptive technology and training so that Varun can use these adaptive technology effectively.

Now, Varun has his own caseload of NDIS participants after surpassing 6 months of employment. With a secured employment as the basis of his better future, Varun recently got married. Slowly but surely, Varun is attaining what he sought out when he migrated to Australia.
