Margaret has all the attributes of an ideal employee in the retail industry – bright, friendly, reliable, and with a wealth of customer service skills and experience. However there was just one thing that kept employers from hiring her.

“They can’t seem to get past my age,” said Margaret, who had been searching for work for almost a year.

“I have been subjected to prejudice when applying for jobs.”

Margaret came to Olympus Solutions member organisation, Ability Options Brookvale, where Therese and Denise provided much-needed support and encouragement throughout her job search journey. They helped her to polish her resume and improve on her interview techniques, particularly on how to address her mature age in interviews as this seemed to be a significant barrier for her.

Therese and Denise also assisted Margaret in accessing the Australian Retailers Association retail program, giving Margaret industry training and work experience. Margaret also received assistance with work clothes and travel costs.

As a result of her training, Margaret was successful in securing a permanent role with her work experience placement provider. She is now a Retail Assistant and valued member of the team at Myer in Warringah Mall.

“Thank you so much, this is such a big step forward for me,” said an appreciative Margaret, who provides a fine example to would-be employers as to the value of hiring mature-aged staff.
