Peter Builds a Great Career as a Carpenter
Meet Peter, he’s a great handyman, loves to work outdoors and was seeking job opportunities that would be long term and sustainable.
During his free time he is a very active volunteer at The Men’s Shed where he helps with various projects to help men remain engaged with the community and prevent social isolation.
“The Men’s Shed is great because it keeps people engaged in projects and builds a sense of community among us and it’s a good way to keep fit and positive.”
Peter wanted to find a job that would be long term so that he could make financial plans for the future. Although he has some mental health barriers, he is proactive in managing it. As a result, he is able to continue working, but preferred part-time hours.
Peter met with Olympus Solutions Employment Liaison Consultant, Larry and together they update Peter’s resume and highlighted his strengths and experience in relevant fields.
Initially, it was challenging to find hands-on, highly skilled roles with part-time as most employers of these positions were seeking Full Time employees.
After several attempts, Olympus Solutions Employment Liaison Consultant, Larry approached a local pool table manufacturer, Master Billiards Pty Ltd for a carpentry role and put forward Peter as a potential candidate. The company was impressed with Peter’s skills and experience and Olympus Solutions was then able to negotiate a casual position for Peter.
Peter proved his experience and skills to his new employer and they were very pleased with his performance, subsequently increasing his work days from one day a week to three days a week in the busy periods.
Peter’s Manager at Master Billards, Mathew says “Peter’s employment here has been great, his attitude and dedication is second to none, he cares so much for the job that he does and myself that the business is the winner. The support Peter has received from Olympus Solutions has been positive also.”
The employer also understands Peter’s mental health situation and therefore manages his roster accordingly so that he has rest days in between his work days.
“Flexibility of hours that we can have him in here has been a positive for us, and for him also during the learning cycle, not putting too much pressure on himself. To see Peter grow with confidence and his positive attitude is great.” Says Matthew.
Peter has reached more than 6 months of employment and even with his busy schedule, he still finds time to volunteer at Men’s Shed Australia.
He says “Larry found me this job. I was so happy to get this job because it’s a carpentry role and it’s only a walking distance from my home. I love my job not only of the work that I do but because of my boss, Matthew, and my co-workers because they are good to me and they are very supportive. I will continue to work and perform my duties to the best that I can.”
Well done Peter, what a fantastic outcome!
