Mathew lands his first job at St.Vincent De Paul
When Mathew first met with Olympus Solutions, we discussed his career options and he was then referred to a Pre-Employment program (Work for the Dole – WFD) that would help him develop his customer service skills and gain work experience.
He began the WFD activity at the retail and warehousing project at St. Vincent de Paul Society where he began helping at the front store, the warehouse at the back and also assisting customers.
Mathew’s Olympus Solutions Employment Advisor guided him through the process and encouraged him to take on this opportunity that this would be a great project for him to be able to step into a work type environment and gain some valuable experience. From the various WFD projects available, his Employment Advisor referred him to this project because he expressed interest in customer service.
Gayaneh, WFD Advisor says “I believe in the benefits of the WFD project and we also encourage job seekers to see the benefits of the program; that it is the perfect opportunity to work in a team and get work like experiences. For many people, it’s the first step to finding paid employment”
While Mathew was participating in the WFD activity, the Area Manager at St. Vincent De Paul trained him in the responsibilities of the role. Within a short period of time, he proved to everyone that he had the potential to become a great employee. He attended regularly, he was very reliable and willing to help whenever needed. He provided great customer service, learnt how to arrange stock, adjust labelling, sort through donations and very soon became a great all-rounder in the store.
The host, St. Vincent De Paul were so pleased with Mathew, they asked Olympus Solutions if they could find more participants as eager and reliable as him. After completing 6 months of the WFD activity, St. Vincent De Paul offered Mathew a paid role as a Shop Assistant as he had shown them his commitment to contribute to the running of the shop. He is still employed by the organisation and is enjoying his role at the store.
The WFD program has really helped Mathew to grow and develop himself.
“The WFD program has really made a positive difference in my life. It’s given him more confidence and the ability to plan my days and have a more regular schedule” says Mathew.
