From perceptions of barriers to a position of empowerment
From an early age Andrew had a vision impairment which gradually worsened, eventually losing vision in both his eyes. As a result, Andrew has embraced assistive technologies such as smart phones and apps to carry on with life, quickly picking up new digital technologies with ease.
However, finding a suitable job has been a hurdle. When Andrew attended job interviews not only did he have to show that he was the most suitable candidate for the job but also had to convince prospective employers to not let their thoughts about disability affect their decision making in hiring him.
Recently, Ability Options and Uniting worked together in placing people with varying disabilities, into positions as NDIS – Local Area Coordinators (LAC’s). One of the many benefits of this is the Local Area Coordinators can relate to their participants, supporting them to access the appropriate services available since they themselves have lived experience with disability. Andrew was on one of the successful candidates to be chosen for the LAC role.
“Having Andrew join our team has been a very positive learning experience for us, using the latest technologies to ensure we have all the right supports in place for Andrew to effectively perform his LAC role. Andrew was particularly patient with us while we worked through initial IT concerns. But now he is flourishing and conducting his meetings solo”, said Uniting District Manager, David Hicks.
